I will be making posts about different aspects of female body image in our world today and long ago. I read many books, articles, critiques, reports, and essays on the subject that I believe you will find interesting. The first is a book that is infamous about the discussion of female body image; it's The Beauty Myth by Naomi Wolf. This is by far one of my fav books now, she is brilliant! I have to divide my analysis of this book into different parts, so this is just Part I, stay tuned for Part II later!;-)
The Beauty Myth....
....“women must want to embody it and men must want to possess women who embody it" ~Naomi Wolf
Female body image can be seen through all types of mediated images such as magazine advertisements, television commercials, music videos, posters, billboards, and movies. However, what is the reason behind showing women a certain beauty standard? The reason is control, and these specific standards of beauty are false, so they are myths.
In Naomi Wolf’s The Beauty Myth, she argues on how our Western culture has brainwashed women into thinking they need to look a certain way to be accepted. The significance of the book is to show how our society controls the way women view themselves through the use of images and the media (Wolf 17). Wolf defines the beauty myth as “the use of female beauty as a political weapon against women’s advancement” (Wolf 10). This beauty myth is what has caused a backlash in feminism, “disempowering backlash propaganda that suggests that feminism makes women ugly, or forces women to choose between beauty and liberation”.
Therefore, women feel ugly if they decide to wear a suit and flats to work instead of a tight skirt and heels. Successful women are seen as unattractive, or shall we say what some may call "non-feminine" in our society because
this is a male fear. I feel that extremely successful women are empowering, sexy, and attractive. Yet, successful women have the highest percentage of singlehood in our society. If our society can produce images in which women can be controlled and only focus on their looks then this helps maintain male dominance in society. Women unfortunately calculate their value with their bodies. The main idea is that the problem is not that these images exist. The problem is that they are so prevalent and shown to all kinds of women every single day.
According to Wolf, “Beauty advertisers pressure mass culture to populate itself almost entirely with images of the icon” (3). If an ad can force a woman to focus on a scale and mirror rather than her job, then the manipulating is complete (Wolf 3). This is because men’s fears are calmed when these images are viewed by women because these images put women “back under the control of men” (Wolf 4). This basically means that women cannot advance in society.
It is a serious problem when women would rather lose weight than be successful, “33,000 American women surveyed said they would rather lose 10 to 15 pounds, than achieve any other goal” (Wolf 6). This is peculiar because women have never been more successful than they are today. However, the way that women feel about themselves “physically” is much worse now compared to the generations before (Wolf 6).
They cannot become successful because they become distracted by unnecessary or “frivolous things”. These things include beauty, body, face, make-up, shoes, hair, and clothes. These aspects of a woman are frivolous, because they should not matter. Instead, a woman should focus on her career and advancing herself in a male-dominated society. There is an “underlying self-hatred,” and women try and fix it in various ways. Women become obsessive over these negative beauty images. Women begin to feel guilty and take up negative habits that distract them from being successful. These habits can be excessive dieting, eating disorders, extreme shopping, cosmetic surgeries, or using drugs in order to lose weight. According to Wolf, “Eating disorders rose exponentially and cosmetic surgery became the fastest growing medical specialty” (7).
Researchers have actually found that the female self-esteem becomes extremely low after viewing a beauty image. The problem with the myth is that it allows people to consider beauty in a way that,
“women must want to embody it and men must want to possess women who embody it” (Wolf 7). It is a form of natural selection.
The main question that Wolf asks is “What is the relationship between female liberation and female beauty?” Can women become liberated with these images exposing false representations of women each day? Many 3rd Wave feminists have been trying to change this and update the feminist agenda for the younger generations. Some states have even made appearance discrimination illegal, “women don’t have to be thin and blonde to do their jobs well” (Wolf 5). However, the negative effect is extremely strong because it has been this way for a long time.
