Get Resume Ready!

>> Sunday

I have been researching lately on how to update my resume and make it pop! It's the 21st century and with how the economy has been it's extremely hard to get a job. However, with the right tools and resume this "recession" may not affect you. Problem #1: Should your entire job history be on a resume? This is the biggest issue people have with their resumes. On mine, I was applying for writing and editing jobs but when you looked at my resume it said Bath and Body Works or any other retail stores I worked at. I don't think that someone hiring me to write cares that I know every flavor and scent of a Wallflower plug-in. Then again, you never know. ;-) Solution #1: Leave your job history to a minimum. I decided that any job you apply for, the person hiring you may want to know that you are....well....hirable. So I decided to list on my resume my last three recent jobs. Especially the one that I worked a long time at because this shows loyalty and consistency. Problem#2: Do people still list their interests? When I first did my resume back in 2000 it was imperative to list your interests. This shows employers that you have extracurricular activities. But is it really that important that they know you enjoy kayacking or singing in your church's choir? Solution #2: Only list your interests pertaining to the position. I went ahead and took my interests off and replaced it with a skills section. However, those that want to leave an interest section make sure it pertains to the job. For instance, if you're applying to be a graphic designer then one of your interests should include managing your website or designing flyers. This way the employer will understand that you truly have a passion and since you already love that type of work, then you'll be the best kind of employee! Problem #3: Should my resume include a cover letter? This is easy. Yes. Solution #3: Always have a cover letter saved and ready to go. Not all jobs require you send a cover letter with your resume, but some do and we don't want to be caught off guard. My cover letter describes my college experience, my work experience, and well my writing experience. The best advice I can give for a cover letter is just have a main one that can be used for the majority of the jobs you apply to. I don't have a cover letter for any receptionist job I may apply for, but if a newspaper asks for one I'll be prepared. Problem #4: If I use color or interesting font, my resume may seem unprofessional? We are taught to use black and white on our resume and simple fonts. To me, this seems so boring, original, and I am afraid that my resume will be overlooked or tossed to the side. On the flip side, you do have to be careful because you do not know who will look at your resume. Someone that has a hard time reading crazy fonts may not like your fancy lettering. Solution #4: Keep it simple, but make it your own. I decided to keep my resume black and white but I made my heading stand out. I picked out ONE font for my title that portrayed me. The rest of the resume, I tried to make headings bold and separate sections for easy reading. However, as I researched on the internet photographers, web designers, grapic designers, artists, and musicians get a little more creative. It is acceptable for these types of resumes to have color, crazy lettering, or not even be on a page at all. Most of their resumes are on a cd or site. So it is very important that you follow guidelines and remember to be yourself!

Female Body Image: A Glance at Naomi Wolf's The Beauty Myth Part I

>> Saturday

I will be making posts about different aspects of female body image in our world today and long ago. I read many books, articles, critiques, reports, and essays on the subject that I believe you will find interesting. The first is a book that is infamous about the discussion of female body image; it's The Beauty Myth by Naomi Wolf. This is by far one of my fav books now, she is brilliant! I have to divide my analysis of this book into different parts, so this is just Part I, stay tuned for Part II later!;-)

The Beauty Myth....

....“women must want to embody it and men must want to possess women who embody it" ~Naomi Wolf

Female body image can be seen through all types of mediated images such as magazine advertisements, television commercials, music videos, posters, billboards, and movies. However, what is the reason behind showing women a certain beauty standard? The reason is control, and these specific standards of beauty are false, so they are myths.

In Naomi Wolf’s The Beauty Myth, she argues on how our Western culture has brainwashed women into thinking they need to look a certain way to be accepted. The significance of the book is to show how our society controls the way women view themselves through the use of images and the media (Wolf 17). Wolf defines the beauty myth as “the use of female beauty as a political weapon against women’s advancement” (Wolf 10). This beauty myth is what has caused a backlash in feminism, “disempowering backlash propaganda that suggests that feminism makes women ugly, or forces women to choose between beauty and liberation”. Therefore, women feel ugly if they decide to wear a suit and flats to work instead of a tight skirt and heels. Successful women are seen as unattractive, or shall we say what some may call "non-feminine" in our society because this is a male fear. I feel that extremely successful women are empowering, sexy, and attractive. Yet, successful women have the highest percentage of singlehood in our society. If our society can produce images in which women can be controlled and only focus on their looks then this helps maintain male dominance in society. Women unfortunately calculate their value with their bodies. The main idea is that the problem is not that these images exist. The problem is that they are so prevalent and shown to all kinds of women every single day.

According to Wolf, “Beauty advertisers pressure mass culture to populate itself almost entirely with images of the icon” (3). If an ad can force a woman to focus on a scale and mirror rather than her job, then the manipulating is complete (Wolf 3). This is because men’s fears are calmed when these images are viewed by women because these images put women “back under the control of men” (Wolf 4). This basically means that women cannot advance in society. It is a serious problem when women would rather lose weight than be successful, “33,000 American women surveyed said they would rather lose 10 to 15 pounds, than achieve any other goal” (Wolf 6). This is peculiar because women have never been more successful than they are today. However, the way that women feel about themselves “physically” is much worse now compared to the generations before (Wolf 6).

They cannot become successful because they become distracted by unnecessary or “frivolous things”. These things include beauty, body, face, make-up, shoes, hair, and clothes. These aspects of a woman are frivolous, because they should not matter. Instead, a woman should focus on her career and advancing herself in a male-dominated society. There is an “underlying self-hatred,” and women try and fix it in various ways. Women become obsessive over these negative beauty images. Women begin to feel guilty and take up negative habits that distract them from being successful. These habits can be excessive dieting, eating disorders, extreme shopping, cosmetic surgeries, or using drugs in order to lose weight. According to Wolf, “Eating disorders rose exponentially and cosmetic surgery became the fastest growing medical specialty” (7). Researchers have actually found that the female self-esteem becomes extremely low after viewing a beauty image. The problem with the myth is that it allows people to consider beauty in a way that, “women must want to embody it and men must want to possess women who embody it” (Wolf 7). It is a form of natural selection.

The main question that Wolf asks is “What is the relationship between female liberation and female beauty?” Can women become liberated with these images exposing false representations of women each day? Many 3rd Wave feminists have been trying to change this and update the feminist agenda for the younger generations. Some states have even made appearance discrimination illegal, “women don’t have to be thin and blonde to do their jobs well” (Wolf 5). However, the negative effect is extremely strong because it has been this way for a long time.

It's a Man's World (Feminist Religious Article)

>> Saturday

Mary Daly’s “Beyond God the Father,” gives the reader a unique look at certain aspects of patriarchal religion and institutions as well as male domination within the Christian belief. When I first started reading this text, I was nervous because I thought that it would make me uncomfortable since I am a Christian. However, it was actually intriguing to read a topic that is so controversial. Daly makes an argument by addressing that women do not play a dominant role in religious language. The words God, Father, and Son are referring to a male embodiment. Daly isn’t suggesting that we start calling God a “Goddess,” but she does want her audience to take note of these terms. Also, in her chapter “After the Death of God the Father,” she does not capitalize the words “him” or “himself” when referring to God. I am not sure if this is intentional but I have never seen that before. Our society is strict on capitalizing He, Him, Himself, when referring to God.
She continues her argument by suggesting that the universe is dominated by a male, God. Daly feels that this has spread throughout our society as well. By this I think she means that men have the most control. Who do these men have control over? The answer is more than likely women. The female reader can relate to Daly on this assumption because we see this everywhere. When dealing with male/female relations, at home the wife is usually a mother or a housewife cooking and cleaning for the man. The husband is labeled “head of household.” It is ironic that the woman does all the “house duties” but doesn’t get to be head of it. This could be “sex role segregation.” Furthermore, Daly goes into detail about the workplace. The success of women usually comes from training by a man. The dominant, masculine attitude of female judges and senators is because they were more than likely trained by men.
Daly’s language is straightforward and she does not hold back her opinions of male dominance in religion. Her language flowed well and was easy to understand, but some of the things she says I didn’t agree with and she came off a bit atheist to me. However, as I continued reading I realized that she wasn’t necessarily atheist. Instead, she just felt that God was more than a Father, Son, or Holy Ghost. Daly felt that he was beyond these terms and should be labeled as a “being” instead of a “he.” As for women, in her chapter “Exorcising Evil from Eve,” I do agree with some of the points she makes. She states that “woman’s inferior place in the universe became doubly justified. Not only did she have her origin in the man; she was also the cause of his downfall and all his miseries.” I agree with this because I have personally heard many guys use the “Fall of Adam” as an excuse for female behavior. I also agree that this female nature is stuck in society’s minds, particularly male’s. With this female ideal in the minds of men it is hard for women to separate themselves from this “temptress” standard. As Daly states, this is a “society dominated by men,” so if a female does succeed in it eyebrows are raised. Women get discriminated against by comments like “Oh she just got that job because she’s pretty,” and no one considers a woman’s intellect. She not only covers women’s role in society and the workplace but also in church. She feels that man-made religions shun women in pastor or preaching positions. I agreed with this because I had a female pastor before and I remember our community gave her a hard time. She had many people that told her that she was not called to be a pastor because she was a woman. She continued being a pastor, and honestly I didn’t feel that she wasn’t qualified. She was just as qualified to preach as my male pastors have been. As a matter of fact, I felt more comfortable going to her and getting advice. I think that this is the overall theme of her argument. Daly feels that the patriarchal language in religion is possibly hypocritical. She does not understand how such a spiritual and ethical based religion can portray women as inferior to men. Her argument shows her audience that there are women in society that are concerned that there may be a sexist tone in religious texts. I don’t necessarily agree with this but I understand where female critics and feminists are coming from. In her argument, Daly portrays to her audience her opinions on sexist language, male authority, and the status of women in society based on patriarchal institutions.
